Ph.D. (Chemical Engineering), granted March, 1991. M.S. Chemical Engineering, 1987. B.S. Chemical Engineering and B.S. Chemistry, 1982. All degrees from University of Washington.

Experience:

January 1995 – present, President and Co-Founder, Eigenvector Research, Inc., a full service chemometrics research, consulting, training and software company.

  • Creator of PLS_Toolbox Advanced Chemometrics and Machine Learning software for use with MATLAB®. Have directed the continued development of PLS_Toolbox and other software packages for process monitoring and hyper spectral image analysis along with the infrastructure for supporting thousands of users.
  • Creator of Eigenvector University, an annual week-long series of Chemometrics and Machine Learning courses typically attended by ~50 students and taught by ~8 instructors, now in its 16th edition. Have taught approximately 200 short courses in 15 countries attended by thousands of employees and students from over 250 corporations, research laboratories and universities. Have also developed online learning alternatives and webinar series.
  • Completed consulting projects in a wide variety of applications including development of analytical devices for medical applications, threat detection, environmental and process monitoring as well as fault detection systems for use in chemical and manufacturing processes.
  • Authored and co-authored more than 50 peer reviewed journal articles, in addition to several book chapters, patents, conference proceedings, etc. cited over 4500 times, h-index 35.

September 1982 – December 1994, Senior Research Scientist, Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory, Richland Washington. Projects included: basic research on ion exchange and precipitation processes for decontaminating radioactive waste solutions and subsequent flowsheet development for these processes.

June 1991 – December 1995, Owner, Eigenvector Technologies. Development and sales of PLS_Toolbox for use with MATLAB.

Research Interests:

All aspects of chemometrics, particularly the application of chemometric methods for chemical process analysis, monitoring and control. Also methods for use in medical diagnostic devices, chemical threat detection systems and hyperspectral image analysis. Recent work has focused on adapting and evaluating modern machine learning methods and artificial intelligence for use in chemical applications.

Other Interests:

The promotion of youth academics and athletics, especially alpine ski racing. United States Ski and Snowboard Level 3 Technical Delegate. Have officiated at over 300 alpine race events and volunteered at many more. Through Eigenvector, Sponsor of Mission Ridge Ski Team, Schweitzer Alpine Racing School and University of Colorado Ski Team. Active with Lake Chelan Valley Scholarship Foundation which provides scholarships for college undergraduate education for Chelan, Manson, Holden and Stehekin youth.

  • 2002 Unilever R&D Vlaardingen (URDV) Author Award for Best Paper, “Canonical Partial Least Squares and Continuum Power Regression” with S. de Jong & N.L Ricker
  • 2012 Pacific Northwest Ski Association John Genoud Award for service as a race official
  • 2014 Mission Ridge Ski Team Hampton Award for service to the team
  • 2019 Herman Wold Medal in Gold “for Pioneering Achievements in Process Chemometrics and his extensive deep commitment to the development and proliferation of the field of chemometrics,” presented by the Swedish Chemical Society. (Only non-academic and only American to receive the award.)
  • 2019 Summer Fun Nationals Masters Skier of the Year for service as an official and as a competitor.
