Target Audience

Beginning/Intermediate Chemometrics is aimed at engineers, chemists and other scientists who want to be able to analyze their own laboratory or process data, develop their own data models or develop instruments that produce analytical data. It is especially well suited for those with an interest in process analytical technology (PAT) in the pharmaceutical, semiconductor, food & beverage, and process industries. The course serves individuals with a need for exploratory data analysis, development of predictive models such as analytical instrument calibrations, soft sensor models, multivariate statistical process control (MSPC), fault detection and sample classification. No prior knowledge is for this course, although some knowledge of basic statistics and elementary linear algebra is useful.

Course Description

Beginning/Intermediate Chemometrics will cover the fundamentals of many commonly used chemometric methods such as principal components analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) regression. Emphasis will be on applying these techniques in the chemical process and laboratory environment for instrument calibration, sample classification, Multivariate Statistical Process Control (MSPC), and the development of inferential sensors for process control. The class begins with a brief review of linear algebra and basic statistics and moves quickly into PCA and PLS. Advanced preprocessing methods will be covered with an empahsis on Raman spectroscopy. The course concludes with a day at HORIBA Scientific in nearby Edison focusing on Chemometrics in Raman applications.

Computers will be provided, but particpants are encouraged to bring their laptops with Solo 6.2 or PLS_Toolbox 6.2 installed. Demo copies will work just fine. Users with Eigenvector accounts can download free demos. If you don't have an account, start by creating one.

About the Instructors

The course will be led by Eigenvector's Chief of Technology Development Jeremy M. Shaver. Dr. Shaver holds a doctorate in analytical chemistry and has experience in a wide variety of applications spanning chemical process monitoring, modeling and analytical instrument development. He will be joined by another senior Eigenvector staff member TBD. Dr. Eunah Lee of HORIBA will join the Eigenvector staff.

PLS_Toolbox discount: All attendees can purchase PLS_Toolbox for MATLAB or Solo software for $200 off the current industrial rate as part of the course.

Payments must be received by October 7, 2011, in order to get the early registration prices.

Complete refunds will be made for cancellations prior to October 7, 2011. Cancellations after that date will be assessed a $250 cancellation fee.

Lodging and Transportation

The first three days of the course will be held at the Hyatt Regency at Two Albandy Street, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 (see map). The fourth day will be at the JY Horiba offices at 3880 Park Avenue, Edison NJ, 08820. This is approximately 9 miles, 20 minutes, from the Hyatt.

Newark International Airport (EWR) is approximately 22 miles, 35 minutes, from the Hyatt in Edison. They Hyatt can be reached by taxi from EWR for $45-65. The Hyatt offers a free shuttle servicing locations within 5 miles of the hotel.
